The 2014 Golden Nugget's Games of the Year.
<comparing the opening and closing lines>
As promised in yesterday’s blog, I compared the Golden Nugget preseason lines to the actual closing lines at the time of kickoff. Naturally, there were some significant swings from the preseason lines as the season progressed and more data points became available.
The largest shift below occurred with TCU, which I identified as being substantially undervalued in the preseason in tabbing them as my #1 Most Improved Team, leaping from a 10 point favorite to a 31 point favorite over a woeful SMU team whose head coach had just resigned after two games. Interestingly, while shifts may become more pronounced by November, the public perception moved quickly in this Week 3 contest. Despite the massive line adjustment, TCU throttled SMU 56-0 to cover the new spread easily. Staying in the Big 12, Baylor’s dominant performance last year led to the #2 and #3 line shifts, as the Bears became overwhelming favorites in their November games against Oklahoma State (-9 to -29) and Texas Tech (-6.5 to -26). In both cases, however, the Bears failed to cover the spread at game time, although they would’ve covered the Golden Nugget spread in their 21 point win over Oklahoma State.
On the flip side of the coin, you can see that several large favorites experienced a sizeable downside adjustment. Just as the largest upward shift was 21 points for TCU, the largest reduction in point spread was 21 points for North Carolina, which was favored by 14 over Virginia in the preseason. By the time that the South’s Oldest Rivalry took place in late October, however, the Tar Heels found themselves as a full touchdown underdog in an eventual 28-27 win. In this case, early season chalk players would have lost on UNC, while anyone who waited until the week of the game to select Virginia would have lost. Likewise, Oklahoma State was tabbed as a 19 point favorite in an October home game against West Virginia, which had finished just 4-8 in 2013. By kickoff, the Mountaineers had shifted from major underdogs to 1.5 point favorites and they covered easily in a comfortable 34-10 road win.
