One of the great debates in college football every year is which conference is the best. Fans across the country have their opinions and are usually divided to which area they live in. Many fans living in the Midwest have always felt that the Big 10 has been the best conference, while fans living in the South clearly feel that the SEC is the best. One of the ways in determining who has the best conference is taking the conference vs conference records. Since many schools schedule weaker opponents in their non-conference schedule, another key determination is taking the conference record vs bcs conferences.

It seems that every year the SEC has been rated as my top conference and so far through the regular season, the SEC remains the top conference in college football. The SEC had two teams (Alabama, Florida) run through the regular season undefeated before the Crismon Tide beat the Gators 32-13 last week in the SEC Championship. It was the first time in any conference championship game that two undefeated teams ranked #1 and #2 faced off. The above chart shows that the SEC had the best record vs other conferences. The conference also had the highest winning percentage (71.4%) vs BCS teams.

Since the ACC raided the Big East for 3 of its top teams, this league has outperformed most folks expectations (including mine) and this year was no different. The conference had the 2nd best overall record vs other conferences and were 50% against BCS teams which ranked #3. Also they have an undefeated team for the first time since 2002 in #3 Cincinnati.

Last year, an argument could be made that the Big 12 conference was the best as they had a 29-10 record in FBS non-conference games during the regular season which ranked #1 and they had 5 top 25 teams at the end of the year which also was #1. This year they fall to 3rd in their overall record against the other conferences and were just 4-7 (36.4%) against BCS teams.

The Big 10 has clearly slipped the last three years and this year they came in 4th overall vs other conferences (72.7%) and had just four wins against BCS teams. The Pac 10 had a 70% winning percentage vs other conferences which was good for fifth but were the only other conference outside of the SEC to have a winning record vs BCS teams (54.5%).

I usually consider the MWC the best non-BCS conference in the country and this year was no different as the MWC was the only non-BCS conference to have a winning overall record vs the other conferences and had the most wins against BCS teams with 5 which actually was more than the Big 12 and the Big 10. Also for the 2nd year in a row, they have a BCS team in undefeated #4 TCU.

Since many lower tier teams in the conferences bring down the conferences overall record, another way to determine who has the best conference is to analyze the top teams. This is a chart of conference vs conference records using only the bowl participants. As you can see, the SEC again had the highest winning percentage (95.0%) overall and the highest % (83.3%) vs BCS teams. The Big East performed well again in this chart with a (86.7%) overall and 60.0% vs BCS teams. The Big 10 moved up to the #3 in this chart with 82.1% overall, while the Pac 10 leapfrogged the Big 12 as well with a 81% mark overall and the 2nd best record against BCS teams (66.7%).

Outside of Texas, the Big 12 bowl teams did not have a great year coming in at #5 with 75% overall and were just 2-5 vs BCS teams. The ACC was also 75% against other conferences and were 6-5 (54.5%) against BCS teams.

The MWC against ranked above all the other non-BCS conferences with 70% overall while the WAC thanks to Boise St were a respectable 64.7% overall.
