NEWS & NOTES • WEEK 8 - Cincinnati was not that impressive in their 34-17 win over USF. In the 1H USF had a 248-143 yd edge. At one point Cincinnati had 2 FD’s and 10 points. USF led 7-3 and was driving for the 14-3 lead when they were int’d and ret’d 83 yds setting up a 1 play TD. USF missed a 50 yd FG and with UC backed up to its own goal line, the Bearcats got a 3rd & 17 prayer pass to the sidelines where the WR had a tip-toe catch for a FD and UC would drive on for another TD with 4:31 left in the half. In the 2H, USF looked to have a 60 yd TD pass on the 3rd play of the 3Q but it bounced right off the chest of Mitchell who was wide open. When Pike re-injured his wrist, UC had to turn to backup QB Collaros who is smaller and more mobile. USF was ill prepared for a running QB and he ran a simple QB draw and ended up racing 75 yds for a TD and a 24-10 lead. USF would drop a sure IR TD with 3:20 left 3Q and had another deep pass on 2nd & 11 go right off the receiver’s hands...
Riley Skinner had 4 TD passes and 360 yards passing the previous week and was the ACC leader in pass efficiency coming in. Skinner hit just 11 of 24 while Wake Forest rushed for 81 yards on 44 carries. CU had a 271-106 yd edge at the half and led 31-3 and coasted in the 2H playing their backup QB’s most of the half...

A look at the stats shows Nebraska with a 285-259 yd edge over Texas Tech but that is misleading. At the half, TT led 24-3 and had a 211-103 yd edge and NU did not pull within 24-10 until 8:40 remained. The key play of the game happened with TT up 7-0. NU was at the TT17 when they threw a lateral and the WR who dropped it acted like it was an incomplete pass but TT’s DL Howard picked it up and ret’d it 82 yards for a TD and a 14 point swing...
Florida barely survived Arkansas but it was mostly due to shooting themselves in the foot in the 1H. They missed a 37 yd FG and fmbl’d at their own 31 setting up Ark for their first touchdown. When you play an option offense, generally on the first 2 series the D gives up long drives as they adjust to the speed of the option and then they adapt. Such was the case with Navy/SMU. Navy had 2 long drives to open but were SOD at the SMU26 and had just 1 FD in the 2Q as SMU took charge. At the half SMU had a 194-100 yd edge and led 21-7. Navy’s offense went 3 & out to open the 3Q but then appeared unstoppable as they would score TD’s on their next 4 poss to stunningly take a 35-28 lead with 9:11 left. SMU went 85/16pl for a TD with 1:35 left but SMU’s Szymanski missed a 43 yd FG in OT and he had been perfect inside the 49 and Navy hit a 24 yd FG to escape with the win...

USC was on the verge of blowing out Notre Dame while also on the verge of OT. USC settled for 24 and 37 yd FG’s after a pair of long drives and only led 13-7 at the half. The Irish were SOD on 4th & 1 at the USC27 and the Trojans scored TD’s on their next 3 poss. A McKnight 1 yd run with 13:13 left made it 34-14 and it appeared it would be another USC blowout. The Irish battled back. They went 68/7pl for a TD then after an int got a 3rd & 12, 15 yd TD pass to make it 34-27. The Irish took over with 4:18 left and went 74/16pl and had a 1st & gl at the 4 but their final 3 passes were incomplete. After the 2nd pass it appeared the game was over but the replay officials put :01 back on the clock giving the Irish another chance and it fell incomplete...
There was nothing fluky about Colorado’s upset of Kansas and they almost gave the game away at the end. CU led 24-3 with 2:25 left in the 1H and at that point had a 168-60 yd edge. They gave up an 80/11pl drive for a TD with :11 left in the half to get the Jayhawks back within 4. Max Hall of BYU made a key play just before the half. With the game tied at 14, BYU had an int in the EZ with 6:04 left in the half and drove 80/13pl. The clock was running and Hall was supposed to spike the ball but he audibled out of it and went for a 1 yd TD run with no time left. Had he been stopped on the run, they would not have scored but BYU led 21-14 at the half. They did lead 35-21 and were driving for a 21 pt margin when they were SOD on 4th & 1 at their own 40 and the Aztecs got a TD with 8:17 left. BYU closed the scoring with a 44 yd FG with 2:21 left.

POINTS LEFT OFF THE BOARD - Louisville had an amazing loss. UL fmbl’d at the Connecticut 39 in the 1Q. They missed a crucial xp with 1:09 left in the half. Middle Tennessee unexpectedly susp’d QB Dwight Dasher and C Thompson for the 1Q of their game vs Mississippi St and MT had zero points without them. When Dasher ret’d, he did lead a drive for a TD but was clearly not on his game as he hit just 11 of 22 for 129 yards with 3 int’s. There were numerous blown opportunities for points in this game.
