Daily Blog - Sunday, September 13th
Welcome to my Sunday Blog. During the offseason I had just one weekend blog but each week during the season I will take a look at the Top 25 performances from the just completed week with a little analysis as well as a quick review of the past weekend.
On Monday I will give you my News & Notes where I delve deeper into every game that was played this past weekend, breaking down individual drives and giving you misleading finals and other interesting tidbits.
These Power Ratings don't just look at the final score of game but factor in yards rush and pass for the offense as well as yards allowed rushing and passing by the defense. They also factor in home field edge, and are heavily weighted towards the strength of opponent played. That is why during course of the season you'll see teams that lost the game had a better individual game than teams that beat them simply because the team they played was superior and much less was expected of them.
I will update these rating every week. The Power Ratings change from week-to-week as each opponent's Power Rating changes from week-to-week. These ratings have NOTHING to do with my preseason Power Ratings for an individual team but rely 100% on the yards and points and the strength of their opponent's Power Ratings. In the next couple weeks I will have the average rating for each team updated on Sunday's and the updated week-by-week performances for each week of the season based on their opponent's current grade.
Here are some interesting thoughts on this week's Top 25 performances:
Kansas had very impress road win at UTEP outgaining the Miners by 443 yards for the second best performance of the week.
Houston's upset of a Top 5 team only got them the #5 spot because they only outgained the Cowboys by 3 yards.
It's interesting that USC/Ohio St had almost an equal grade for their matchup despite USC having the yardage edge and winning the game on the road. The reason is - Ohio St faced the superior opponent and played well, as they were expected to lose the gm by 7.
My computer also factors in garbage yards as it is set to take out out garbage yards and points in the equation. Such is the case for TCU/Virginia as the Frogs won that one on the road. While they did all 14 points, UVA got 2 late garbage TD's, so I took 7 points and some yards off of their stats.
South Carolina actually had a higher grade than Georgia despite losing the game. S Carolina outgained Georgia by 119 yards and was facing the stronger team on the road.
Here is my Top 25:
