Daily Blog - Sunday September 20th
At the top of this week’s performances were a couple of defenses that shutout potent offenses. As I called for on my Thursday blog, Landry Jones, taking on weaker defense, had a much better day statistically than Tulsa’s GJ Kinne. Kinne came in among the NCAA leaders in pass efficiency. Tulsa came into last week averaging 451 yards per game and yet the Sooners got their 2nd consecutive shutout. Kinne threw for 106 yds (46%) with an 0-2 ratio while Jones threw for 338 yds (68%) with a 6-2 ratio. CLICK HERE FOR OKLAHOMA’S GAME-BY-GAME STATS.
Toledo came in averaging 555 total yards per game but was held to 210 total yards.
Florida St did only outgain BYU by 39 yards but knocking off a Top 10 team on the road, 54-28, made Florida St one of the most impressive performances of this week.
Miami, FL dominated Georgia Tech by even more than the final score would indicate. CLICK HERE FOR MIAMI’S GAME-BY-GAME STATS. One year after allowing 472 yards to GA Tech on the ground in the cold in Atlanta they gave up just 95 yards rushing. Good enough for the #4 performance of the week.
While Washington was outgained by 67 yds against USC, defeating the #3 team in the country made the Top 5 list of performance this week.
Boston College came in averaging 395 yards per game but Clemson allowed just ONE YARD OFFENSE with 5:00 to go in the 3Q. Even after their defense sat through two long rain delays, they still yielded just 54 total yards offense and BC’s only score was after CU fumbled at their own 12.
If you’re surprised that Wake Forest’s 35-0 win over Elon made this list I believe that Elon will be a playoff team at the end of the year in FCS and my computer was calling for a much closer game.
The situation greatly favored Arkansas and I was impressed with Georgia’s performance on the road in their third straight tough game. My computer was also impressed.
Keep in mind my computer gages strength of opponent, as well as site, and you will notice some team’s that lost this past weekend actually made the Top 25 performances.
Texas Tech outgained #2 Texas by 74 yds on the road and only lost by 10 as Texas was playing its A+ game with legitimate revenge.
Tennessee made the list as any team that can go into The Swamp and play the Gators within 10 had an outstanding game.
Michigan St almost upset a strong Notre Dame team in South Bend and also made the Top 25 list this week.
Nebraska should’ve beaten Virginia Tech on road in Blacksburg but gave up late score. Still the Huskers outgained the Hokies by 65 yards, and my computer said Nebraska had a better individual team effort than Virginia Tech did despite the fact the Hokies won. The Hokies of course were at home with solid situational edge.
Connecticut continues to impress me and their win at Baylor with a backup QB made the Top 25 list.
Cincy’s win in Corvallis was also impressive and the Bearcats are proving to be a stronger team than I estimated heading into the year.
For the 2nd straight week a MAC team knocked off a Big Ten team on the road and Northern Illinois did so with 454-335 yard edge.
We are almost to the point where I will start listing my computer’s average game grade for each team and we may be able to do so once we have a full month’s results accounted for. This grade would only look at the opponent, the sites, the yardage and the points and would not take into account any power ratings on the individual team itself. Here are my computer’s Top 25 grades for this week:
