Game Grades
In 2010, I introduced the concept of “game grades” to my magazine readers. The concept of a game grade is similar to a game score in baseball: both systems attempt to rank a particular single game performance using numerous key statistical factors, as opposed to relying simple on the final score. As you may recall, I posted game grades on this blog on a regular basis during the 2010 and 2011 seasons as well.
To expand upon this concept a bit, the game grade accounts for the margin of victory, as well as the yardage margin. In addition, the teams are graded on their performances in rushing, passing and scoring. Logically, the grade reflects whether a team was playing at home and the relative quality of the opponent. I also compare the grade against my computer projections going into the game.
Since 2010, I have created an annual list of top 10 game grades from each year (with 11 one year), so there have been 41 games listed in my magazine. From a conference standpoint, the Big 12 leads the way with 13 games and the SEC is closely behind with 11. Big 10 and PAC 12 teams have made the list 7 times each with the ACC (2) and MW (1) also appearing.
Here are the top 10 Game Grades over the past 3 years, many of which are sure to jog your memory and perhaps bring back some very good- or very bad- memories:
