Repeating as Division Champions.
In the inaugural Phil Steele’s Pro Football Preview, I forecasted the winners of each NFL division and I was very pleased to predict 7 of 8 division winners. In addition, my magazine was the only major publication to pick the eventual Super Bowl Champion New Orleans Saints to win the NFC South. Over the past 5 years, I have been able to follow up that performance by picking 29 of 48 division winners (over 60%).
The axiom about the NFL being a league of parity is true. Dating back to 1998, only 31% of division champions have been managed to emerge as repeat divisional winners. In 2002, the NFL realigned from six divisions to eight divisions, each with four teams, which made it easier to repeat. Despite this change, only 34 of the 88 division winners, or 39%, repeated from 2002 to 2013. Unusually, however, seven of the eight division winners in 2013 repeated last year.
Since 2002 there have been 104 division winners but ONLY 16 of the NFL’s 32 teams have been notched back-to-back division titles. New England has repeated an amazing 9 times, including 5 straight, while Indianapolis has done it 6 times, Green Bay has done it 5 times (including 3 straight) and Seattle has done it 4 times. Last year, the Carolina Panthers became the first ever NFC South team to repeat (albeit with a losing record) while the NFC East now has the longest streak with 10 seasons sans a repeat.
The charts below also show that no division winner from the AFC West or NFC North has won a Super Bowl since the 2002 realignment. In 2013, Seattle became the 1st NFC West division winner to accomplish that feat. You will also see that 10 of the last 13 Super Bowl winners have been division winners and all 13 Super Bowl losers won their division. Those you who have purchased my pro magazine can also refer to page 26 for this information.
