Looking at First Downs per Game

Last week (6/20 blog) I wrote about what to look for when analyzing a team’s rush/pass ratio. In today’s blog I provide you with the teams FD’s/gm overall, rush, pass and via penalty.

The MOST IMPORTANT thing to remember when analyzing the stats, especially from last season, is to do so with per/game averages AND NOT total overall numbers. In 2014 four teams (Buffalo, Florida, Idaho & Kent St) only played 11 games while Ohio St and Oregon each played 15. That is FOUR EXTRA games played (+36.4%) making, in this case, total FD’s a mute point.

Let’s first look at the offensive FD’s/gm. Baylor led the country averaging 30.1 FD’s/gm. That is the 3rd best in the last 11 seasons being bested by only La Tech in 2012 (31.5) and by Houston in 2009 (30.3). You will also see that I colored the 20 best in each category green and the 20 worst in each category red.  Wake Forest had the lowest average last season earning just 14.3 FD’s/gm. The lowest in the last 11 seasons was Temple in 2006 when they only averaged 11.5 FD’s/gm.

Below are the FD’s last year’s team allowed. Clemson led the way allowing a paltry 14.2 FD’s/gm while Penn St was #2 allowing 14.6 FD’s/gm. The best performances in the last 11 years was the incredible Alabama defense of 2011 in which they allowed only 10.1 FD’s/gm and next was Virginia Tech in 2006 (11.3/gm). On the flip side the Cal Bears allowed 27.7 FD’s game while Iowa St allowed 27.3.
