Home and Away Records for each Team Last 10 Years.

I asked myself a question the other day about how much the home field edges matter in college football. I am just wrapping up the process of going thru each game for the upcoming season and putting down who I would favor and by how much. A teams schedule can make a huge difference during a season and not only WHO you play but WHERE you play them.

This will be a two part blog and the second part I will have for you in a couple of weeks. This blog shows each teams Home and Away records the last ten years. Of the 128 teams in the FBS, only ONE (Duke) has a better record on the road than at home and it is not by much. Duke is 26-40 39.4% the last ten years at home and 22-32 40.7% on the road. Bowling Green is at a tie with a home mark of 29-24 54.7% and 35-29 54.7% on the road. Texas is surprisingly right there also with a home mark of 43-20 and a road mark of 30-14, just  .1% better at home. The other teams that do NOT have at least a 10% better record at home than on the road are Northwestern, Ball St, Oklahoma, Ohio St, Virginia Tech, Charlotte , Pitt and WKU. Here are those 11 teams showing the minor differences between their home and away record.

WKU 29-27 2 51.8% 27-35 -8 43.5% 8.2%

That means that 117 teams have at least a 10% difference. The team with the biggest difference is Arkansas St which has a record of 44-12 at home and just 23-41 on the road for a 42.6% difference. There are eleven teams that have at least a 30% better record at home than on the road and here are those eleven teams.

Which teams have fared the best on the road overall. The list mirrors the best home team records overall. Ohio St and Oklahoma have identical 39-7 road records for an 84.8% mark. Boise St, Alabama, Oregon, TCU are among others. Here is a list of the ten teams that have won 67% or better of their road games the last ten years.

While those teams have won at least two out of three road games, there are actually ten teams that have won FEWER than 20% of their road games, which is less than one out of five. The worst road record belongs to Colorado which is just 6-48 on the road. What makes that really interesting is that five of those seasons were in the Pac 12 and five were in the Big 12.

Now here is the overall chart. It is ranked by best home records. Boise St, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Wisconsin and LSU are at the top of the list. Ironically Ohio St plays Oklahoma and Wisconsin plays LSU early this year.

At the bottom of the list is Eastern Michigan, New Mexico St, Georgia St, Idaho and Tulane.

The overall numbers show that all 128 FBS teams have combined for 5,019 wins at home the last ten years and 2,938 losses at home for a winning percentage of 61.9%. Visiting FBS teams have won 2,917 games and lost 4,036 for a record of 42.3%. Keep in mind teams play FCS opponents and rarely play them on the road which helps those averages. I said this was the first of two parts, the second blog, which I will have in about two weeks, will detail how teams have fared at home and away in conference play over the last two years. I expect the numbers will show less of a difference, but I believe that study will still show that home field matters.
