% of Yards Returning
Today’s blog continues my in-depth look at my NCAA Experience Chart. For seven years I had listed an experience chart, which broke down the number of seniors, juniors, sophomores and freshmen each team had in the two deep and rated the teams experience level with a formula I devised. In 2009, I made the experience chart FIVE TIMES better by adding new categories like Career Starts on Offensive line, % of Offensive Yards returning, % of Defensive Yards returning and % of lettermen returning.
Dont forget that the 2016 College Football Preview is up and available right now on iTunes, Google Play and through our office (see bottom of page).
Today I will look at the % of yards returning. I took all of the yards each QB threw for as well as all of the individual rushing yards and receiving yards for each team. I then took all of the returning yards from 2015 and divided it into those for the percentage.
At the top of the chart is Louisville. They return 9 starters from last year’s offense including their QB, top 5 rushers and top 10 receivers. They have 99.79% of their total yards returning from last year. They are followed closely by Old Dominion, who returns 9 starters on offense, their QB, top 4 rushers and top 5 receivers. They have 97.03% of their yards back. Other schools at the top of the list include: LSU (97.01%), Georgia Southern (69.80%) and SMU (93.82%).
Last year the teams at the top of this chart were Tulsa (2-10 to 6-7), Arkansas St (7-6 to 9-4), Appalachian St (7-5 to 11-2), Western Michigan (8-5 to 8-5) and Oklahoma (8-5 to 11-2). Four of the top five improved their record while Western Michigan stayed the same.
It is very interesting to note that defending national champ Alabama ranks low at #119 with 32.50% of their yards returning. Alabama has 6 offensive starters returning. They lose their QB, top 2 rushers and 4 out of thier 8 top receivers.
At the bottom of the list is one team that lost OVER 80% of their yards gained from last year. Utah loses their QB, 4 of their top 5 rushers and their top 3 receivers. Bowling Green is next with 20.90%, Massachusetts (21.93%) and California (23.13%). Also Ohio St #122 was devastated by the NFL draft this year. The Buckeyes only have 3 offensive starters returning with their QB and lose 3 of their top 4 rushers and 5 of their top 6 receivers.
I will be back Monday to take a look at another factor in my experience chart (% of tackles returning).
