QUARTERBACKS - In his first four years Carson Palmer (PS#7) had a ratio of 39-39. As a senior and in the second year of the Norm Chow system he blossomed throwing for 3,942 (63.2%) with a 33-10 ratio, won the Heisman Trophy and was the NFL's #1 pick. Lefty Matt Leinart won a 4-way battle for the job in '03. Leinart had almost identical stats to Palmer throwing for 3,556 (63.4%) with an outstanding 38-9 ratio. They signed John David Booty (PS#1), who left HS early, and he played as a true frosh. In 2004 Leinart threw for 3,322 (65.3%) with a 33-6 ratio and won the Heisman Trophy. Leinart turned down a shot to be the top pick in the NFL draft and as a senior threw for more yards (3,815) completing a higher % (65.7) with a 28-8 ratio guiding the team to the National Title game. Booty played in 10 games but didn't get as much action as the coaches had hoped due to close games. Booty threw for 327 (64.3%). Paul McDonald's son, Michael, played in 4 and his only pass went for a TD. Mark Sanchez (PS#2) was redshirted but was named Scout Tm Off MVP. Booty experienced back spasms in the spring which required surgery but coaches are optimistic he will be ready for fall while Sanchez was susp'd at the end of spring. The Trojans hope the new QB has as much success as Leinart (#1DC ARZ) did in his first season. RUNNING BACKS - This is a school known for its RB's with five Heisman Trophy winners in Mike Garrett, OJ Simpson, Charles White, Marcus Allen and Reggie Bush. Power runner LenDale White (PS#7) led in '03 with 754 (5.3). Hershel Dennis (PS#10) added 661 (4.8) and Reggie Bush had 521 (5.8). Dennis was suspended early in '04 and tore his ACL prior to the bowl. Bush (sprinter on USC track tm) had 908 (6.3) and 43 rec (11.8) while White powered his way to 1,103 (5.4) and 15 TD's. Desmond Reed (PS#45DB) had 173 and was the ST POY. Dennis sat out '05 and the "Thunder and Lightning" combo were the best set of RB's since I have started writing my magazine. Bush rushed for 1,740 (8.7), had 37 rec (12.9) and even added 672 in returns. He had a Pac 10 record 513 all-purp yards vs Fresno St and became the 2nd pick in the NFL draft. White and Bush combined for 98 career TD's which set an NCAA record (1943-'46 Army's combination of 'Mr. Inside and Mr. Outside' Doc Blanchard and Glenn Davis). Both White (#2DC TEN) and Bush (#1DC NO) opted to leave early for the NFL and also departing is underrated (#5DC SEA) FB David Kirtman (see Hardcore). Dennis tore his ACL this spring and is expected to miss the '06 season. Desmond Reed (5_9 180 Jr), who has 725 career all-purp yards, is also questionable for the year with a knee inj. Former LB Ryan Powdrell was a standout in spring and Chauncey Washington (6-1 205 Jr, PS#12) could win the starting job if he remains eligible in the fall. Walk-on John Griffin (6-0 195 Jr) was one of the few healthy RB's in spring. |
From 1950-1989 USC had only 8 seasons in which they lost 5 games or more. In the next 12 years they reached that 5 loss total 9 times and were one of the most underachieving teams in the country. Pete Carroll has officially brought the Trojans back. In 2002 they faced 11 bowl teams (#1 toughest schedule) but still finished 11-2. In 2003 they had to replace Heisman winner Carson Palmer but won the AP National Title (12-1). They outscored their foes 41.1-18.4 and their only defeat was a 3 OT loss to Cal. In 2004 USC returned 12 starters and became just the 2nd team ever to be #1 in the AP poll for the entire season. They outscored foes 38.2-13 and had their 5th ever perfect regular season (1st since 1972). They demolished Oklahoma 55-19 in the National Title game, but did have four close calls (Cal, Stan, Ore St, UCLA). The Trojans nearly got the vaunted three-peat in 2005 and broke Miami's record of 21 straight weeks as the AP's #1 team (33). The Trojans' D allowed 22.8 ppg, the highest in 5 years but the offense was almost unstoppable (49.1 ppg). For the 5th consecutive year, the Trojans benefitted from plus double- digit turnovers (+21) but again had some narrow escapes (Ariz St, ND, Fresno). In the National Title game, they were stopped short by 2 inches on a 4th & 2 which would have clinched it allowing a TD with :19 left. Prior to the Title game, ESPN had run a series of how USC would stack up against the greatest teams of all-time and that loss in the Rose Bowl stopped a streak of 34 straight wins. They hold the P10 record (current) for most consecutive P10 wins (23) and have produced three of the last four Heisman winners. The losses this year are mind-numbing with Bush, Leinart, White and 11 NFL DC's overall departing. They "earn" 44 points in my NFL Draft Day Party Hangover (see pg 308) but surprisingly 3 schools had more 1st round DC's than they did [at 2]. USC outgained league foes by an amazing 274.5 ypg, almost twice as much as their National Title team of 2004 (151 ypg). They have the fewest returning starters in the Pac 10 (10). The offense returns just 4 starters and loses five AA's, so it will be weaker but still potent. None of Pete Carroll's defenses have returned more than six starters and this year's group has an outstanding front 7 and should greatly improve upon last year's 22.8 ppg allowed. Due to injuries and suspensions, there are additional question marks at QB and RB but 5 of my 7 sets of power ratings call for USC to go unbeaten for the 3rd consecutive regular season making them a National Title contender again. |
